What is the meaning of news to Japanese journalists and editors?

While the top story listed in Google News Australia had 585 news articles (and counting) regarding this morning’s magnitude 7.1 earthquake that I was awoken by (twas a smooth slow rockin’ quake in Nagoya), the main online Japanese newspapers (for example The Japan Times Online and the Mainichi Daily News) have absolutely nothing regarding the event. Their top stories as of writing were Miki Ando’s figure skating, and the development of Japanese curry space food.

Then again, earthquakes aren’t really news in Japan I guess…
